U.S. Open Week 2
This week I actually had the pleasure to attend the U.S. Open quarterfinals matches. It was an amazing experience and even got to wear my new pink On Roger Pro Fires and channel my inner Fonseca while sipping on one or five Honey Deuces.
The 2025 U.S. Open is ending this Sunday, and I'm sad that the tournament, and the constant tennis talk, will be over. But for now, let’s rejoice!
Here’s a quick recap of what went down this week at the last major tournament of the year.
In this post, I’ll cover week two’s:
💪 Biggest Flex
🥩 Biggest Beef
🫤 Biggest Flop
🏆 Biggest Winner
💪 Biggest Flex
Jessica Pegula’s Dad
For his daughter Jessica Pegula's matches, billionaire Terry Pegula (owner of the Buffalo Bills) brought his $100 million yacht to New York. However, due to its size, the yacht couldn't fit in the city's marinas and had to dock in Long Island. From there, he either drove 30 minutes or took a short helicopter ride to Arthur Ashe Stadium.
While Pegula's father, who made his fortune in natural gas, is benefiting from $850 million in New York taxpayer funds for a new Bills stadium, Jessica Pegula presents herself as a "people's princess" who rides the subway. Despite this image, she likely has the highest net worth of any active tennis player.
🥩 Biggest Beef
Paige Lorenze and Morgan Riddle
Okay, this might be overhyped, but a potential feud is brewing between tennis WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) Morgan Riddle (Taylor Fritz's partner) and Paige Lorenze (Tommy Paul's fiancée). Riddle, known as the original "tennis girlie," established a style adopted by many, while Lorenze, a social media influencer with a high-profile dating history and a personal brand, quickly gained prominence after her relationship with Paul. The recent announcement that Lorenze and Paul are new Burberry ambassadors has intensified the rivalry over who is the most influential tennis WAG.
😕 Biggest Flop
Taylor Fritz
Speaking of Taylor Fritz, this week’s biggest flop was not only losing to Novak Djokovic (who he’s never beaten) and losing on a double fault (embarrassing) it was wearing his Boss headband upside down.
🏆 Biggest Winner
Amanda Anisimova
Amanda Anisimova defeated Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open quarterfinal last night, showcasing what many consider to be the best backhand in tennis. Anisimova, who won the U.S. Open as a junior in 2017, has been playing excellent tennis for a while.
Following a difficult loss to Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, Anisimova got her revenge by dominating Swiatek in the U.S. Open semifinal. She now faces Aryna Sabalenka in the final, a player she famously defeated in a breakthrough match at the 2019 Australian Open. Anisimova's powerful play promises an exciting final against Sabalenka.
